Building a private practice brings up many questions — about systems, sustainability, and what the process actually looks like.

Below are some of the questions practitioners most often ask when exploring The Studio.

About The Studio
What exactly is The Studio?

The Studio is a collaborative practice architecture studio that helps therapists, BCBAs, coaches, and wellness practitioners build ethical, sustainable private practices across the United States.

We focus on designing the operational systems that allow practices to function clearly and sustainably — including billing systems, workflows, documentation, policies, and backend infrastructure.

This isn’t traditional business coaching. It’s practice architecture.

Who is The Studio for?

The Studio is designed for practitioners who want to build or refine independent practices that feel aligned with their values.

Many practitioners we work with include therapists, BCBAs, social workers, coaches, educators, and wellness practitioners.

While our services are open to all, the Studio intentionally prioritizes and centers neurodivergent, queer, and BIPOC practitioners who are often underserved by traditional practice-building models.

Who is The Studio not for?

The Studio is likely not the right fit for people looking for hustle-culture coaching, rigid formulas, or copy-paste business strategies.

Our approach prioritizes sustainability, ethical practice design, and long-term clarity rather than rapid scaling.

Why is it called a “Studio”?

Because building a practice is creative work.

Like an artist’s studio, this is a place where ideas are shaped, systems are designed, and practitioners are supported as they build something meaningful.

A private practice is not just a business — it is a living system that reflects the practitioner who leads it.

What kind of people tend to thrive in The Studio?

People who care deeply about the work they want to build.

People who value integrity, sustainability, and thoughtful systems.

People who want their work to support both their clients and their own wellbeing.

The Work & The Paths
What problems do practitioners usually come to The Studio with?

Practitioners often come to The Studio when they feel stuck between wanting independence and feeling overwhelmed by the systems required to run a practice.

Common situations include:

  • starting a private practice but not knowing where to begin
  • existing practices with chaotic or unclear systems
  • billing and insurance complexity
  • practices that grew faster than their infrastructure
  • wanting systems that support neurodivergent ways of working
  • needing operational clarity without burnout
I’ve taken business programs before. How is this different?

Most business programs focus primarily on marketing and revenue growth.

The Studio focuses first on building the structural foundation of a sustainable practice — including operations, billing systems, documentation, workflows, and ethical infrastructure.

The goal is not fast growth. The goal is work that can last.

What are the Two Paths?

The Studio offers two primary ways to work together:

The Guided Path — a collaborative build where we design systems with you.

The Signature Path — a white-glove experience where the full practice architecture is built for you.

How do I know which path is right for me?

Guided Path is ideal if you want to learn the systems while building them.

Signature Path is ideal if you want the practice architecture designed and implemented for you with minimal administrative load.

We can help you decide which path fits best during a consultation conversation.

What if I’m not sure what my practice should look like yet?

That’s completely normal.

Many practitioners enter The Studio while they are still clarifying their vision. Part of the process is helping you design a practice that reflects your values, capacity, and the work you want to do.

What if I move slowly?

That’s completely fine.

The Studio prioritizes sustainability rather than urgency. Many practitioners build their practices gradually while balancing other responsibilities.

What if my work doesn’t fit neatly into one category?

That is actually very common.

Many practitioners build hybrid models that combine therapy, coaching, education, consulting, or creative work. The Studio intentionally supports interdisciplinary and non-traditional practice models.

Practical Details
Do I need to be a therapist or clinician to work with The Studio?

No.

While many Studio members are therapists or clinicians, we also work with coaches, educators, and wellness practitioners building values-aligned practices.

Do you work with practitioners outside Rhode Island?

Yes.

The Studio supports practitioners across the United States. Because regulations vary by state and payer, some systems may require small adjustments depending on location.

What technology platforms do you work with?

We commonly support systems such as Office Ally, SimplePractice, TherapyNotes, Stripe, HIPAA-compliant intake platforms, and scheduling systems.

We help practitioners choose tools that match their workflow and capacity.

How long does it take to build a practice?

Timelines vary depending on the complexity of the practice, state-specific regulations, and insurance requirements. Most builds take approximately 8–16 weeks.

Our focus is on building systems thoughtfully and correctly rather than rushing implementation, so the practice is stable and sustainable long-term.

Do you provide clinical supervision?

The Studio focuses on practice architecture and operational systems.

While we do not provide clinical or licensure supervision as a standard service, we maintain strong relationships with experienced supervisors and can connect practitioners with trusted professionals when supervision is needed.

Do you provide legal or tax advice?

The Studio does not provide legal or tax advice directly.

However, we work closely with trusted attorneys, financial professionals, and tax specialists within our ecosystem and are happy to connect practitioners with experienced professionals when that support is needed.

What if I’m worried about financial stability?

That’s a very real concern.

Early in the Studio process, practitioners have the opportunity to work with Atlás Alvarado Estrada of Ilumina Financial, who helps translate personal financial needs into practical business decisions.

Together, we look at pricing, capacity, revenue planning, and sustainability so the practice being built actually supports the practitioner’s life.

The Studio Ecosystem & Fit
Why does The Studio have an ecosystem of collaborators?

Building a practice often requires more than one type of expertise.

While The Studio focuses on practice architecture and operational systems, we collaborate with trusted professionals who bring expertise in areas such as financial planning, billing troubleshooting, leadership development, and practitioner wellbeing.

These collaborators are independent practitioners whose work complements the Studio and helps ensure practitioners are supported from multiple perspectives.

Is this a competitive environment?

No.

The Studio is intentionally collaborative rather than competitive. Practitioners are encouraged to share knowledge, resources, and experiences so that everyone benefits from collective learning.

What if I decide The Studio isn’t the right path for me?

That’s always possible.

Part of our work is helping practitioners gain clarity about their direction. Sometimes that clarity confirms the path forward, and sometimes it leads somewhere different — both outcomes can be valuable.
